Glastonbury viewers left baffled at Chris Martin’s bizarre accent as Coldplay kick off headline slot
GLASTONBURY viewers were left doing a double take at Chris Martin’s accent as Coldplay headlined the second night at Worthy Farm.
The Brit singer, 47 – whose band wowed with a sensational set on the Pyramid Stage which also aired on the BBC – caused confusion as he first addressed the crowd.
Chris, born in Whitestone, Devon, appeared to speak in an American twang as he took to the Glastonbury stage.
Coldplay kicked off the Saturday night set with their iconic track Yellow before following up with Higher Power and Adventure of a Lifetime.
Yet it was during an instrumental section in the latter track where he first addressed fans that sparked confusion.
He told the crowds: “OK OK here we go.
“Everybody go low, unless you’re 75.
“All the way back I see you – lets go.”
Fans watching the coverage on the BBC were left confused by his seemingly Americanised accent.
One took to X to muse: “What the hell accent is that, Chris Martin?”
A second put: “Chris Martin’s American accent is so bad he makes Alex Turner sound like he’s from Sheffield.”
A third then wrote: “Chris Martin treading dangerously close to turning into Bono with his weird /non descript accent,” as one then. put: “What’s this weird faux American accent he’s doing?”
Another suggested a reasoning why as they said of the Fix You vocalist: “Chris Martin’s accent is strange now when he talks.
“He does live in Malibu, California though which is probably the reason. #glastonbury.”

Later on in their Glastonbury set, the group brought out Michael J Fox as a very special guest.
The Back To The Future actor, 63, who is living with Parkinson’s disease, held a red Fender Stratocaster as he was wheeled onto the Pyramid Stage.
It came during the group’s track Humankind and left fans filing the Somerset field in floods of tears.
Frontman Chris gave him the perfect introduction and sang: “He’s another legendary Michael, one who just totally rocks, with his Chuck Berry riff and the way he punched Biff, ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Michael J Fox.”
The Marty McFly star then strummed his guitar during the group’s moving anthem Fix You.
The set marked Coldplay’s fifth Worthy Farm headline stint.
The group’s other headline slots came in 2002, 2005, 2011 and 2016.
Meanwhile, they also played the New Tent in 1999 and The Other Stage in 2000.
