Sporty BMW praised by Jeremy Clarkson for its ‘good looks, comfort & economy’ can yours for less than £10k
A SPORTY BMW that received high praise from Jeremy Clarkson is now a second-hand bargain.
The BMW 640d, produced between 2011 and 2018 by the luxury German brand, is a great looking grand tourer with a focus on comfort, and for the frugal… it boasts a diesel engine.

For his review for The Sunday Times in 2012, Clarkson noted that the 640d’s diesel motor was a “sign of the times.”
But he added: “It’s a BMW diesel, which means it hums rather than clatters.
“And it’s fitted with two turbochargers – a small one that gets going almost immediately, and then a bigger one to give you some oomph on the open road.”
The 640d, with its 3.0-litre motor that’s capable of 308 bhp, is widely loved today for its performance mixed with comfort and economy.
On the interior, which offers plenty of space, Clarkson added: “There are plenty of other coupes on the market, but none has so much space in the back and none is anything like as squidgy Slumberdown-soft.
“There’s a misplaced line of thinking in the car industry that anyone who buys a good-looking two-door coupe must therefore want a bone-shaking sporty ride.
“Some do, for sure, but plenty don’t, and that’s where the 6-series is brilliant.”
That’s matched by its style and ride – especially if you happen to purchase an example with the Comfort seats, which Jezza said is like “driving around in a cloud.”
He added: “It is good-looking, it is a two-door coupe, it is stylish, and yet it rides like a hovercraft.”
In 2012, from new these cost a rather stiff £63,900, but these days they can be found second-hand for less than £10,000.
Amazingly, we found a very nice looking model with 100,000 miles on the clock for £9,495.
This comes as Clarkson revealed his biggest car selling regret after flogging a classic BMW – which he described as his “worst decision ever.”
Elsewhere, a car expert revealed five cheap motors under £10,000 with the lowest insurance costs – including a “pretty lairy” BMW sportster.
