Everyone knows minoxidil grows in thinning hair but another ‘X’ ingredient can too, plus my other tips to fight shedding
ANYONE who’s ever been desperate to grow in thinning hair has heard of minoxidil, the active ingredient in Rogaine.
But a pharmacist says there are other ways to grow your locks, including using a lesser-known ingredient that also has an “x” in the middle.

Carolina Goncalves is the Superintendent Pharmacist at Pharmica, a UK-based online prescription service.
Speaking to The U.S. Sun, she shared must-try tips for nurturing thinning tresses.
INCREDIBLE INGREDIENTS
Goncalves said scientific research supports the use of biotin, caffeine, minoxidil, and kopexil in hair care.
“Biotin helps in the production of amino acids that form part of the structure of keratin – a protein that makes up hair, thereby promoting stronger hair growth and reducing brittleness,” she said.
“Caffeine, on the other hand, is thought to help stimulate the hair follicles, improve scalp blood circulation, and potentially extend the growth phase of hair.”
She revealed research into the use of caffeine in hair care is ongoing.
“Minoxidil widens the blood vessels, allowing more oxygen, blood, and nutrients to reach the follicles, thereby increasing hair follicle size and strength,” she continued.
“Kopexil has similar effects and can increase the elasticity of the collagen around the hair roots.
“It prevents hair loss by anchoring hairs to the scalp and contributing to the density of hair fibers.”
POWERFUL POTIONS
Goncalves said several over-the-counter and prescription products can support hair growth.
Among them is the high-strength topical medication minoxidil, which is sold as Regaine Solution for Men, Regaine Foam for Men, Regaine Foam for Women, and Regaine Solution for Women.
“The active ingredient minoxidil aids blood flow to the hair follicles of the scalp to increase follicle size and hair shaft diameter,” she said.
“This prevents further hair loss and promotes new hair growth.
“I would also recommend Finasteride for men to treat pattern baldness.
“Finasteride is a type of medicine called a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor which works by stopping testosterone from turning into another hormone known as dihydrotestosterone which can stop hair growth.”
