Can Meryl Streep finally win a Grammy on her 7th try? It’s one of the few awards that has eluded her
Meryl Streep has won Oscars, Emmys, a bevy of Golden Globes and multiple SAG Awards. She was awarded the AFI Life Achievement Award, a Kennedy Center Honor and even the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Barack Obama. If there’s an award, Streep has probably won it. But there’s a prize that has eluded her all these years: the Grammy. This year she received her seventh nomination from the recording academy. Will she finally take the trophy home?
This year she’s up for Best Audio Book, Narration and Storytelling Recording for “Big Tree,” the audio book recording of Brian Selznick‘s middle-grade adventure novel. She was previously nominated five times for recording children’s projects: “The Velveteen Rabbit,” “The Tale of Peter Rabbit,” “The Tailor of Gloucester,” “The One and Only Shrek” and “Charlotte’s Web.” And she has one musical nomination for her contributions to the “Mamma Mia!” compilation soundtrack.
Is this finally her year? Interestingly enough, she has to get past the wife of the man who gave her her Medal of Freedom: Michelle Obama, who previously won Best Spoken Word Album four years ago for the audio book recording of her memoir “Becoming.” Now she’s in the running for “The Light We Carry: Overcoming in Uncertain Times,” in which she shares wisdom and strategies for navigating a difficult era.
As of this writing Obama is the front-runner to win the award according to the combined predictions of Gold Derby users who have placed their bets here in our predictions center. She gets leading odds of 10/3, while Streep follows close behind with odds of 37/10. Rounding out the category are politician Bernie Sanders (“It’s Ok to Be Angry About Capitalism”), actor William Shatner (“Boldly Go: Reflections on a Life of Awe and Wonder”) and record producer Rick Rubin (“The Creative Act: A Way of Being”). Who do you think has the advantage?
