I live off-grid in a canal boat… it only costs me £120 a month and fuel is FREE for six months – but it’s not perfect

A WOMAN who lives off-grid in a canal boat has said it only costs her £120 a month and fuel is free for six month – but it’s not perfect.

Laura Woodley, known as May Moon, took to TikTok to share her unusual lifestyle in her tiny floating home.

The content creator shares updates about her life onboard on TikTok
She lives on a 48ft narrowboat

Laura, who works in social media, lives aboard her 48ft narrowboat and travels across the British canals.

And she shares her lifestyle to thousands of followers on TikTok.

Apart from doing boat tours, she also answers questions about her live off-grid and how much she spends each month.

In the video she said: “Each boat’s expenses will vary but in terms of mine specifically.

“It’s not as simple as having fixed monthly expenses like you would living in a house. Sometimes is cheap and other times is not.”

Laura is always travelling – which means she doesn’t have to pay any mooring costs or supplier fees.

She explained: “My boat is set for continuous travel. So it’s completely off-grid. I don’t have any energy bills and no fixed energy supplier.

“I don’t pay for mooring because I’m constantly moving.

However, she has to pay a licensing fee to be able to use the canals.

Sh added: “All boats whether they are in a marina or moored or they’re moving like me have to pay a licence fee to the River Trust.

“For a boat of my size it turns out at a £120 a month. And the other expenses that I have are insurance and wifi.”

Having solar panels means she can spend around four or five months without having to spend cash on utility bills during summer.

When winter hits she spends a minimum of £200 in fuel just to heat her tiny home.

But she claimed the most expensive cost is keeping the boat running.

If a part gets damaged or the boat engine breaks, Laura can be thousands out of pocket.

The content creator added: “Spending across the year could be very cheap but people don’t take into account the maintenance.

“Things can break and need upgrading and I’m currently renovating.”

“All in all that’s going to cost me £2,000 for the whole thing, and I don’t have that saved so fingers crossed nothing else breaks.”

Despite the problems, she said the experience is “worth every penny”.

It comes as a man who worked 60 hours a week and made six figures now lives off grid in an old school bus full of genius features.

Murph dedicated three decades running restaurants and managing other businesses but realised that despite all his hard work he had very little to show for it.

Meanwhile, a woman who lives off-grid in a tent on stilts has said she spends no cash on bills and has an outdoor toilet like Shrek.

Bethan Lindsay and her partner moved full time into a bell tent in the Scottish Highlands to save money.
