23 trends expected to blow up next year, from badminton and jiu-jitsu to aesthetics like 'cafécore' and 'Western Gothic'

It can feel impossible to keep up with today's rapid trend cycle, but Pinterest might have just made things a little bit easier.

The social media company just released a list of trends it predicts to be big next year, called Pinterest Predicts, based on an analysis of popular search terms on its platform to figure out what's bubbling up going into the new year.

This year's list predicted upcoming trends in fashion, beauty, wellness, home decor, and more.

Say hello to the Jellyfish aesthetic

In 2024, Gen Z and millennials will take inspiration from a spineless, stinging sea creature. Searches for the "jellyfish haircut," a bob haircut with longer layers at the bottom, are up 615%. Users are also searching for jellyfish hats, jellyfish umbrellas, and jellyfish lamps.

Feeling bold and blue

Millennials and Gen Z are going to step away from neutrals in more ways than in the upcoming year. Trendsetters are looking for ways to incorporate the hue into their nail art and makeup looks.

Searches for "fun blue nails," are up by 260%. Searches for blue eyeshadow, aqua makeup, and blue makeup looks are also rising. One manicurist, Hannah Lee, told Business Insider that she expects denim blue nail polish to rise in popularity this winter.

Blue makeup won't just be an everyday experiment. Searches for blue makeup to wear to formal events, like prom and quinceanera,s are also increasing.

Bows galore

Searches for the terms "bow outfit" and "bow necklace" were up 190% and 180% respectively. So, don't be surprised if you find yourself unable to escape bows and ribbons in 2024.

One celebrity stylist also told Business Insider to expect a resurgence in bow accessories on the horizon. This may not come as a surprise if you follow fashion influencers on TikTok, as videos of creators using ribbons to accessorize have garnered millions of views.

The bow's rise in popularity is probably a nod to the "coquette," aesthetic, which according to Vogue, is all about embracing soft femininity. This trend, which has also blown up on TikTok, revolves around hearts, glitter, floral prints, and all things soft and girly.

However, the trend may already be getting a bit out of control, as those who search the term on TikTok might be met with videos of people tying pink ribbons to ice cubes and chicken tenders.

If you like keeping up with fashion but don't like shelling out hundreds of dollars on microtrends, then you're in luck. Chances are you already have a spool of ribbon packed away in your closet.

Western gothic

The combination of two unlikely aesthetics might just lasso you in next year. Western Gothic combines dark tones with spurs, studs, leather, and fringe.

Searches for the term "Western Gothic" are up 145%. We will mostly see people incorporate this aesthetic into their homes, with "western bedding ideas," up 310% and "country room ideas" up 125%.

Cafecore in 2024

According to Pinterest, the desire to bring the coffee shop to your own kitchen is increasing, especially among baby boomers and Gen X. Searches for "coffee bar styling" are up a whopping 1,125%.

Users are also searching for "chalk sign ideas," "cafe chalkboard," and "coffee station decor." Perhaps coffee lovers are looking for less expensive ways to make their morning cup, while still getting that calming coffee shop experience.

Things might get a little fishy

Millennials and Gen X seem to be taking an interest in making sure their finned friends have the most stylish tank. Interest in "small aquarium design" is up 245% and "fish tank theme ideas" is up 410%.

One 2019 report showed that millennials really adore their houseplants. A growing interest in planted terrariums and caring for small animals like fish and turtles may have stemmed from a love of plants.

Spending in style

As it turns out, piggy banks aren't just a childhood staple anymore. Searches related to piggy banks are on the rise. Searches for "credit card stickers" are also on the rise, up 140%.

Deep conversations

As it turns out, young Pinterest users aren't a fan of small talk. In 2024, don't be shocked if you find yourself getting into deeper discussions with your Gen Z and millennial pals.

Searches for "hot seat questions" are up 825%, searches for "questions for couples to reconnect," are up 480%, and searches for "deep conversation starters," are up 185%, Pinterest reports.

Off-roading adventures

Boomer and Gen X users are searching for all things off-roading. Searches for "Off-road camping" are up 90% and "Overland gear" are up 110%.

Skincare: it's not just for the face anymore

During the COVID-19 pandemic, when everyone was leaving their homes less than usual, there was a shift toward skincare. Pinterest predicts this trend will continue into 2024, but it won't just be for the face anymore.

Searches for "body care" are up 845% and "body skincare routine" is up 1,025%. Pinterest expects that consumers will start investing in luxurious lotions and scrubs to practice wellness and unwind.

Combat sports

Maybe Mark Zuckerberg is onto something.

It's time to push aside your pilates regimen and for your spin classes to step aside. 2024 is going to be all about using combat sports as a way to relieve pent-up stress. Pinterest trends predict that martial arts is going to be all the rage.

Pinterest noted that searches for "kickboxing aesthetic" went up 265% and "mixed martial arts training" surged 200%. Jiu-jitsu, which Zuckerberg practices, also saw a 30% increase in searches.

A smash-hit sport

Pickleball may have been all the rage over the past couple of years, but some Millennials and Gen Z may prefer to ditch the paddle and make a little racket. Searches for badminton bags, rackets, shoes, and outfits are surging. According to Pinterest, there's even been a rise in searches for "badminton trash talk."

2024 will be all about the tropical getaway

After a stressful few years, it's no surprise that people will want to add a little bit of vacation to their day. Searches for tropical chic decor are up 110%.

Recipes with a taste of the tropics are also trending, with searches for pineapple mocktails, pineapple upside-down cake, and Hawaiian sheet pan chicken on the rise.

Showing that snooze button some love

In 2024, young people may be looking to take it slow, get some sleep, and stay at home. Action-packed family vacations that are planned down to the minute may be a tougher sell.

Searches for staycations, slow life, and digital detoxes were up. ASMR is still well-loved, as searches for "ASMR sleep" are up 165%. This focus on relaxation doesn't mean that young adults have lost their sense of adventure, however, as "solo traveling" searches are up 145%.

Kitchens in colors that pop

Move over minimalism. Pinterest shows that users are looking for ways to add color and personality to their kitchens. Searches for "eclectic," "eccentric," and "kitschy" kitchens are on the rise, according to Pinterest.

Go big or go home

Pinterest also teased 2024's biggest hair and fashion trend. Young adults are expected to dip into voluminous hairstyles and oversized jewelry.

Futuristic chrome and sleek silvers

Pinterest expects that young adults will "trade in their neutrals" for bold metallics. This will be seen in jewelry, nails, fashion, and decor.

Searches for "nail art metallic," were up 295%. But, Pinterest users were also searching for silver necklaces and aluminum furniture.

Scrappy and sustainable

In 2024, crafting will meet sustainability. Crafters are looking for ways to use up leftover scraps of wood and fabric. Searches for "small scrap wood projects DIY," are up 1,220%.

People are also looking to incorporate fabric scraps into quilts and for zero-waste sewing patterns. Pinterest also expects efforts to eliminate food waste to rise in 2024.

Next year's weddings may be a blast from the past

Trends taking inspiration from past decades are nothing new. And in 2024 it's going to be all about the 70s. Weddings and bachelorette parties might not look too different from those that were hosted half a century ago.

Searches for "groovy wedding" and "groovy bachelorette party outfit" were up 170% and 110% respectively. Wedding planners were also often using the word "retro" in their Pinterest deep dives.

Don't be afraid to sift through your grandparents' closet in 2024

Continuing with the trend of all things retro, quirky, and eclectic, trendsetters are no longer afraid to get vintage clothing straight from the source.

The most popular search under this trend was "customized denim jacket," with searches up 355%. You can also expect the terms "grandpa core" and "grandpa style" to start appearing on your timeline, according to Pinterest.

The roaring 20's part 2

Music trends might take an unexpected turn in 2024. Searches for jazz-related terms are going up in 2024. Searches for "jazz aesthetic clothing" are up 180%. Pinterest points at the rising popularity of "Lofi" music to suggest that young people may be trading in rap and pop for something a bit more calming and low-key.

Celebrating the small things

Think your child only deserves cake on their birthday? That's so last year. Pinterest searches indicate that parents are taking time to celebrate the smaller milestones.

For example, parents are looking to celebrate their baby's first tooth or their toddlers mastering potty training. Searches for baby-naming ceremonies and end-of-the-school-year parties were also up.

Fusion foods

Pinterest users are getting a little more creative with their recipes. Ever heard of gummy candy kabobs? 170% more people than usual are searching for recipes.

If you're struggling between picking burgers or Mexican food, why not try a cheeseburger taco or a burger quesadilla? Those two terms are up 255% and 80%. Carbonara ramen is also seeing a surge of 165%.
