Sports Briefs: Mustangs’ Suzuki, Hawks’ Jevarian take second at San Marin mat showcase

Senior Akio Suzuki carried the banner for host San Marin High on the wrestling mat with a second-place finish in the 150-pound bracket at Saturday’s Green & Gold Invitational. Tam senior Robert Jevarian also placed second in the 157-pound division in the tournament, which featured Redwood, San Marin, Novato, Tam and Terra Linda among the 29 teams.

Suzuki (8-4) was pinned by Windsor’s Santion Campos (4-0) after 3 minutes, 42 seconds of the championship showdown at 150 pounds. Novato senior Ikaika Madayag (2-1) won the division’s consolation championship.

Jevarian (7-2) was pinned in 1:28 of the 157-pound title match by Eureka’s Paul Walker (7-2). Meanwhile, San Marin senior Gideon Jacob (7-5) took fifth place with a pinfall win. Novato senior Christopher Martin (3-1) won a 10-8 decision over Mustangs junior Nathan Criswell (2-4) for the consolation championship.

In the 106-pound class, Novato junior Maxwell Kujawa (3-1) placed third as he pinned Concord’s Gaven Taylor (4-4) in 2:22. San Marin freshman zosuke Toshi took the consolation championship. Terra Linda junior Tristan Collins (4-1) placed third at 175 pounds with a pinfall win over Eureka’s John Gonsalves (5-4) in 1:55.

The Mustangs’ Jordan Christensen (10-5) finished fourth at 190 pounds, while teammate Aaron Guillen (5-3) won the consolation championship with a 6-2 decision over Tam senior Decker Scholnick (7-6). San Marin sophomore Jason Gurrola (120) and Novato senior John Gramajo (132) both placed fourth in their classes.

Crosstown rivals squared off at 113 pounds, where Novato’s Jiriah Vannasy (3-2) beat San Marin freshman Ibuki Toshi (4-8) for fifth place after Toshi was disqualified. Terra Linda sophomore Arthur Seppan (144) won by major decision and Novato senior Braeden Carroll (285) won a 2-0 decision as they both placed fifth.

Hornets junior Jonathan Bartnicki pinned Mustangs senior John Ferrua for the consolation title at 175 pounds. Terra Linda sophomore Eric Jimenez (138) also won a consolation title. Tam junior Hayden Perkins (285) and sophomore teammate Abner Arevalo (215) lost in their consolation championship matches, both by pinfall.

San Marin placed eighth in the team standings, edging Novato by a half-point.

Girls basketball

Annabelle Freed led the Peregrine Falcons with 19 points and a strong presence on the boards as Archie Williams High defeated host Terra Nova, 49-43, Saturday on the final day of the Jim Soden Tournament. Lila Peterson added 13 for the Falcons (3-7), who were supported by big efforts during the weekend from Gia DeBok and freshman Reese Patton.

The Peregrine Falcons, who won the tournament last season, lost to Priory, 79-10, and Oakland, 41-37, in the first two rounds.

• San Marin suffered its first loss of the season, 59-37, against Freedom. Junior Quincy Dean led the Mustangs (6-1) with 10 points and five rebounds, while Brianna Nottingham added seven points and Abby Bartholo had six points.

Boys basketball

Gavin Early posted a double-double as San Domenico defeated South Fork, 66-31, in Friday’s semifinals of the Redwood Empire Invitational. A stingy defense helped stake the Panthers to a 18-2 lead after the first quarter. Early led San Domenico with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Drew Morehouse chipped in 13 points, and Irakli Jokhadze scored 10.

• Archie Williams took fifth place in the Redwood Empire Invitational with a 66-19 win over host Healdsburg on Saturday. The Falcons (4-3) jumped out 22-3 in the first quarter and didn’t look back. All-tournament selection Brian Wright had 18 points, nine rebounds and four steals. Senior Alex Martikan had 11 points and sophomore Devin Moss added six points, six assists and four steals. Archie Williams hosts MCAL rival San Rafael on Tuesday night.

• A 40-foot jumper at the buzzer in overtime sent Branson to a 63-60 loss to Salesian in the championship game of the Gridley Invitational. Branson advanced to the title game with a 65-42 win over Clayton Valley and a 63-51 semifinal win over Riordan. The Bulls’ Jase Butler was named the tournament MVP and Finley Keeffe was also an all-tournament selection.

• Gil Ladetsky hit four shots from beyond the arc as Redwood High defeated Sacramento, 60-46, in Friday’s semifinals of the Edison Classic in Stockton. Ladetsky finished with a team-high 15 points, and added seven rebounds to his line for the Giants (5-0). Jake Vasquez grabbed 14 points, nine rebounds and two blocks. The Giants got nine points from Lachlan Kelly and seven from BJ Fischer.

Redwood is scheduled to play rival Branson (4-0) in a MCAL preview Tuesday night.

• Marin Catholic lost, 39-38, in double-overtime against Woodside at the Cardinal Newman’s tournament, despite 13 points each from all-tournament pick Corey Nicholson and Jake Ryan. Bentley Morrow had 12 rebounds.

• Novato claimed the consolation championship at the Mats Classic at Miramonte with a 57-50 win over Casa Grande on Saturday. All-tournament selection Joshua DeVore starred with 21 points and 10 rebounds. The Hornets’ Travis Flick registered 11 points and seven assists, while Brian Yates added 10 points and four steals in a well-rounded game.

The Hornets lost a close game, 52-51, in the opener against Miramonte, despite getting 13 points each from DeVore, Flick and Dominic Scafani. Novato advanced to the consolation championship after Friday’s 52-35 win over Encinal. DeVore hit five 3-pointers and finished with 25 points. Flick added 10 points.

• Marco Gregoire hit the game-winner with 8 seconds left in overtime as Terra Linda capped its comeback with a 71-69 victory over San Rafael. Senior Grady Bowers led the Trojans with 34 points, 10 rebounds, two steals and assists. Junior Chase Addleman hit four 3-pointers and tallied 14 points, while junior Bennett Kayser finished with five points and seven rebounds.

Gio Brovelli, with five 3-pointers, paced the Bulldogs with 34 points. Marcos Tolliver scored 15 points and Parks Thommes had 11 for San Rafael.
