Sports Briefs: Ryan drills 17, but Marin Catholic boys fall to Petaluma
Marin Catholic battled with Petaluma to the end before falling, 54-40, in the semifinals of Cardinal Newman’s tournament on Friday. Jake Ryan led the Wildcats with 17 points, while Corey Nicholson added nine points and four assists. Bentley Morrow turned in seven points and five rebounds.
Marin Catholic (2-5) wraps up the tournament on Saturday.
• Redwood got a double-double from Jake Vasquez as the Giants handed Manteca its first loss of the season, 57-54, in Thursday’s opening round of the Edison Classic in Stockton. Vasquez led the Giants with 24 points, 11 rebounds, three assists, three blocks and three steals. BJ Fisher was perfect in seven trips to the free throw line as he added 13 points to go with four rebounds and two assists. Brennan Woodley finished with 11 points and two steals.
• Parks Thommes’ breakaway dunk punctuated San Rafael’s 63-29 victory over Sonoma Valley on Thursday, avenging an earlier loss to the Dragons. Parks tallied 14 points, eight steals, seven rebounds and four assists. Gio Brovelli added 15 points for the Bulldogs, who got 12 points from Marcos Tolliver.
• Archie Williams High bounced back Thursday after a close loss to Ukiah to defeat Kelseyville, 76-51, at the Redwood Empire Invitational at Healdsburg. Sophomore Brian Wright led the scoring with 25 points and 10 rebounds for the Peregrine Falcons, while senior Julian Nichol added 14 and sophomore Ephraim Sohn chipped in with 11 points and four assists. The Peregrine Falcons had 15 steals, led by sophomore Grady Stewart with seven.
Archie Williams plays Healdsburg on Saturday for fifth place.
Girls basketball
Addie Gaw’s eight points led San Rafael to a 32-12 win over College Prep of Oakland on Thursday. Senior Cassidy Kaplan added seven points in a balanced attack for the Bulldogs (4-3). Sophomores Jessica Vara and Emily Borges chipped in seven points and six points, respectively.
• Avery Myerberg hit the buzzer-beater to force overtime, then scored the game-winning free throw in overtime as the Branson School defeated Amador 59-57 to open tournament play in Windsor on Thursday. Myerberg led the way with 37 points and 13 rebounds. Paige Macy added a solid game with 15 rebounds and Julia St. John scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds for the Bulls.
Girls soccer
Clea Jimenez Donovan scored an early goal as San Rafael battled to a 1-1 draw against Piner on Thursday night. San Rafael (1-0-2) created more chances but were unable to find a second goal. Piner netted the equalizer in the second half.
• Tam’s tough preseason slate continued with a 1-0 road loss against Monte Vista on Thursday night. Tam (0-2-3) plays again on Saturday with a road game against Archbishop Mitty.
• Ava Korich netted a hat trick as Marin Catholic rolled to a 7-0 victory against St. Helena on Friday night. Lea Gorham, Savannah Browne, Kate Batdorf and Lana Wilborg also had goals for MC (3-0-0). Alina Franchetti had a team-high two assists with Brianna Frade, Korich, Browne and Lexi Ferguson also set up scores for others.
• Josie Quinby set up Allie Marinovich twice for goals as Terra Linda battled Novato to a 2-2 tie. The Trojans (0-0-1) scored the tying goal in the 77th minute.
Boys soccer
Alis Diaz Grijalva scored in the 54th minute to lift Terra Linda (1-1-0) to a 1-0 non-league victory against crosstown rival San Rafael (1-2-0) on Thursday night. The goal came following a corner kick taken by Cole Greene. San Rafael’s keeper got a deflection on the ball and Diaz Grijalva got to it and put it into the net.
• Caden Haynor and Nathan Breen scored goals but Marin Catholic fell 3-2 against San Domenico on Thursday. Craig Parker had an assist for MC.
• San Marin lost a 1-0 game against Roseland University Prep on Thursday night.
