ACC Roundup - UNC Falls Short Against UConn

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - DECEMBER 5: Donovan Clingan #32 of the Connecticut Huskies blocks a shot from Armando Bacot #5 of the North Carolina Tar Heels during the second half of a game in the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden on December 5, 2023 in New York City. And another bad shooting night from Armando Bacot

In Tuesday’s ACC Action, Boston College knocked off Central Connecticut, 82-68, Notre Dame took down Western Michigan 86-65, Virginia decked NC Central 77-47, Georgia sliced up Georgia Tech 76-62, Syracuse dismissed Cornell 81-70 and UConn surged past UNC 87-76.

What’s up with Armando Bacot?

In the last six games, he’s shot 20-55 for 36.36 percent. This is a guy who has been dominant inside for most of his career but lately he’s been dreadful.

That’s not surprising given Donovan Clingan, who is a real load inside. Even on TV, at a casual glance, he was much bigger than Bacot.

RJ Davis led the way again with 26 points while Harrison Ingram had 20. However, they were the only players for UNC to hit any threes.

Additionally, the bench only got four points.

Still, UNC hung with UConn for most of the game despite Bacot’s offense being off, the poor three point shooting, the weak bench production and Cormac Ryan still getting over his ankle injury. It’s a lot to overcome and UNC nearly did it.

Central Connecticut State scored the first basket of the game and then BC dominated the rest. It really wasn’t much of a game.

Donald Hand had 16 off the bench while Mason Madsen had 15. Quinten Post had 13 points.

Notre Dame probably won't get a whole lot of easy games this season and may not finish with a winning record, but they are showing signs of growth and good coaching.

In this game, the Irish pulled away in the first half and while Western Michigan cut it to 34-30 at the half, Notre Dame just pulled away again. The Irish shot 40.9 percent for threes and 59.2 percent overall.

Tae Davis had 19 points and 10 rebounds to lead Notre Dame.

It’s still really early but you have to be impressed with what Micah Shrewsberry is doing.

Georgia Tech was brilliant against Duke over the weekend but against arch rival Georgia, not so much. The Bulldogs seized control of the game early and never let up.

Baye Ndongo, who was so impressive against Duke, finished this one with eight points, 11 boards including five offensive and three blocks and three steals. Miles Kelly and Kowacie Reeves had 12 each.

Judah Mintz shook off what Virginia did to him and scored 28, including five threes, to pace the Orange past Cornell 81-70.

Chris Bell had 19 points and four blocks. Justin Taylor finished with 15 points, eight rebounds and six assists as the Adrian Autry era continues to unfold.

Wake Forest got some good news as transfer big man Efton Reid won his NCAA appeal. The Gonzaga transfer should certainly help Wake’s front court.

In another note, former Clemson coach Cliff Ellis, who is now 78 and who has been at Coastal Carolina since 2007, has decided to retire. As Barry pointed out the other day, Ellis has quietly become one of the top ten winningest coaches of all time. He leaves the game with a 909–576 record.

Wednesday’s ACC Action sees Rutgers at Wake Forest, Long Island visits Miami, Maryland-Eastern Shore will see the Pack in Raleigh, South Carolina goes to Littlejohn in a battle of undefeated rivals, and Pitt slides over to West Virginia for the Backyard Brawl.
