The hated plane seats that you should always choose to sit in – you’ll get a quieter flight and more luggage space
A FREQUENT flyer has revealed which plane seats she always insists on booking – even if everyone else hates them.
There’s a general consensus among travel experts that the back of the plane is one of the worst places to sit.
Flight attendants warn passengers not to sit there if they don’t like experiencing turbulence, with planes shaking much more at the back than they do at the front.
What’s more, passengers who sit at the back have longer to wait to get off once the plane has landed than those who sit nearer the front, due to the way people disembark.
However, those two problems are outweighed by the benefits, according to travel journalist Monica Humphries.
She always insists on booking the very back row of the plane whenever she flies anywhere, insisting it has many positives.
The first of which is a quieter flight, less troubled by people passing through the aircraft on their way to the toilet.
She told Insider: “Boeing 787-9s have three bathrooms for economy-class passengers, and they’re all located at the front of the economy cabin.
“Every passenger walks to the front of the cabin instead of the back to use the bathroom.”
Secondly, the back of the plane’s lack of appeal creates its own benefits, particularly when it comes to storing luggage.
Monica said that she has the “best chance of getting accessible overhead storage” at the back, due to the seats further forward being seen as more attractive options.
With fewer people wanting to sit near the back, there tends to be much more overhead locker space there than there is at the front.
The rear seats don’t only have more space for luggage – but for people to stretch out too.
The back row is close to the galley, where Monica likes to work off some of the effects of being squashed into a cramped plane seat.
She added: “Another perk of the back of the plane is galley access. For long-haul flights, I like to get up every few hours and stretch my legs.”
The back seat of the plane has other admirers too, with one of them being flight attendant Annie Kingston who said people who sit there could get extra freebies that other people don’t.
On a blog post for Oyster.com, she said: “We avoid responding to call bells from the front of the plane because answering one means potentially flaunting whatever item the passenger has requested to everyone else along the way.
“This can cause a problem since planes often don’t have enough extra vodka, pillows, earplugs, and toothbrushes, or the time on shorter flights to deviate from the service schedule.
“For passengers sitting near the back of the plane, however, it’s much easier to slip in that second mini bottle of wine.”
Another flight attendant Cierra Mistt also claims passengers who sit near the back have more chance of being upgraded.
In a video on Tiktok, she said: “If our flight isn’t full, we have to move people for weight and balance purposes.
“Normally all aircraft are tail heavy.
“So if we have to move people up to the front, where do you think we are going to take them from? The back.”
Meanwhile, this is why sitting at the back of the plane could even be safer than sitting at the front.
And this is why some people prefer sitting in the middle seats.
