Sports briefs: Marin Catholic scores late to top Tam

The Marin Catholic High baseball team had enough left in the tank after withstanding a big inning from Tam to score the go-ahead run in the seventh inning of a 8-7 victory on Friday.

MC senior Carl Schmidt homered twice and drove in three runs, while Emmet George homered and drove in three runs. Brad Burnes had a double and two RBI for the second-place Wildcats (9-2, 6-2 MCAL).

Tyler Buxton was 2 for 4 with a homer and three RBIs, while Tito Fierstein was 2 for 3 for Tam (8-8, 7-3). Pitcher Eli Solem gave up one run in 2.1 innings.

George scattered four hits across four innings, while striking out one and walking three as four Wildcats pitchers combined on a seven-hitter.

  • Novato High scored the winning run on an error in the bottom of the seventh to defeat San Marin, 6-5, and earn a split of the two-game intracity rivalry. The Mustangs (7-7, 5-4) put up a three-run fourth inning to take a 4-2 lead, before the Hornets (9-4, 4-3) rallied with three runs in the fifth inning during a back-and-forth game. Novato pitcher Dom Scafani lasted two-thirds of an inning, allowing one hit and zero runs while striking out two and walking zero. Julian Oliver, JP Harmon, and Andy Gates each managed two hits for Novato. San Marin’s Riley Desilva was 3 for 4 with a home run in the third inning and a double. He drove in two runs and scored two more. Hayden Devol was 3-for-3, Sean McGrath had two hits and an RBI, while Josh Martin drove in two runs.

Prep softball

Lindsay Harrison hit a home run and a triple as part of a 19-hit day for Marin Catholic in an 18-0 win against Terra Linda on Friday.

Harrison drew two walks, drove in three runs and scored twice. Starting pitcher Selena Pena also homered and threw three innings of one-hit ball.

Sammy Horn and Anya Jaroszewski led MC (6-2, 3-2) with three hits apiece. Lauren Osheroff, Gracyn Lovette, Pena, and Harrison had two hits apiece. Lovette and Harrison had a team-high three RBIs.

Boys lacrosse

The race for first place in the MCAL continued to tighten Friday as Marin Catholic held off Tam, 7-5. The Wildcats (7-4, 4-0) entered the day tied for first place with Redwood (8-3, 3-0), which played St. Ignatius on Friday.

Tam (6-6, 2-2) is fighting with Novato for third place.

  • Seniors Jameson Gilmore and Liam Wood each scored three goals as Terra Linda cruised past intracity rival San Rafael, 10-1, on Thursday. Junior Cole Simon added two goals and three assists for the Trojans (6-5).

Girls lacrosse

Terra Linda’s senior leadership stepped up in Thursday’s 11-5 victory over San Rafael. Ava Jorgensen led the Trojans with five goals, while Nola Gabbard scored four goals and Lucy Jaworski tallied two goals. Junior goalkeeper Adina Golbus had four saves for the Trojans (6-4, 1-3).

Boys golf

Derek Newhall shot an even-par 35 to lead Terra Linda past San Marin, 197-243, on a record-setting day Thursday. According to Trojans head coach Steve Troya it was the first time his team broke the 200 mark during his career.

Sean Madden finished at 36 and freshman Kaden Martin shot a 40 for the Trojans (6-5). Noah Duncan led the Mustangs with a 40.

Boys tennis

The ball bounced the Wildcats’ way in some key matchups as Marin Catholic defeated San Rafael 6-1 Friday. The Wildcats’ Colin Johnston held on for a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 2 singles, while Will Shepard outlast the Bulldogs’ Avi Levine at No. 4 singles, 2-6, 6-1, 10-5. Meanwhile, Marin Catholic’s Scott Bell and Craig Parker held off San Rafael’s Carter and Charlie Bussi, 7-6, 1-6, 10-6, at No. 2 doubles.

  • Chase Hoeveler, Ishwar Jayaraman, Zander Alpert and Cal Keenley swept the singles matches as Branson rolled to a 6-1 win against San Marin.
  • Redwood defeated host Terra Linda 6-1 behind singles wins from Chris Lee, Ollie Weston and Lukas Berger. The Giants swept doubles play.
  • Marin Catholic swept doubles play and the Wildcats’ Qas Vidyarthi capped their 4-3 win over over Tam on Thursday. Vidyarthi held off Tam’s Emmet McEvilley 2-6, 6-1, 10-8 at No. 3 singles. Witt Bulger, Tyler Byrne and Diego Castillo each earned two-set singles wins for Tam.
  • Jesse Chi’s narrow victory at the top of the singles order helped clinch San Marin’s 4-3 victory over crosstown rival Novato on Thursday. Chi defeated Loic Foisy 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 in the deciding match. The Mustangs started with an advantage after Novato defaulted at No. 4 singles, and won a pair of doubles matches.

Badminton

San Domenico (9-0) extended its undefeated streak with Wednesday’s victory over International.
