I’m a dog trainer – 3 small breeds I don’t recommend for first-time dog owners…sausage dogs aren’t as cute as you think
A DOG trainer has taken to social media to reveal the three small breeds that he wouldn’t recommend for first-time dog owners.
Jamie The Dog Trainer, an Australian animal whizz, recently shared a clip on TikTok, revealing why he thinks Dachshunds, Jack Russell Terriers and Schipperkes should be avoided for those looking to buy their first pooch.
He said: “Here’s three small dog breeds I don’t recommend for first-time dog owners.
“Number one, the Dachshund.
“These cute little guys may look like a sausage with legs, however, they are a hunting dog, so they do have drive and they can have a propensity to chase small animals.
“Dachshunds can be a real challenge to socialise.
“They are typically a little bit suspicious of new people and tend to bark.
“A lot of people have trouble with reactivity with these dogs.”
Next, the dog trainer explained why he wouldn’t recommend the Jack Russell Terrier, as he claimed they can be pretty feisty.
He added: “Number two, the Jack Russell Terrier.
“Jack Russells are a super popular breed and there are definitely some calmer Jack Russells out there.
“However, if you get a high-drive one, they can be tenacious and feisty dogs.
“Don’t be fooled by their small stature, even though they’re very tiny, these guys are a big dog at heart.
“These guys have got energy for days, they’ve also got really high prey drives and can be really difficult to handle for some first-time owners.”
Finally, Jamie revealed that Schipperkes can be great guard dogs, but can be very loud.
He noted: “And the last dog on my list, the Schipperke.
“These guys were originally bred to guard boats, they’re also ratters.
“They are fearless and tenacious dogs, even though very small, they have a huge personality.
“They can be fantastic watch dogs but if not socialised properly, they can be a bit barky and reactive.
“Training is also a must because these dogs are super independent.”
Jamie’s clip has clearly shocked many, as it has quickly gone viral and has racked up a whopping 4.6million views.
It has 327.8k likes, 3,320 comments and 5,999 shares.
While some social media users agreed with Jamie’s claims, others were particularly stunned at his thoughts that Dachshunds aren’t good for first-time owners.
One person said: “My dachshund is my first and he was worth every second of training. I love him so much.”
Another added: “But when you DO get a dachshund, they’re the best dogs you will ever have.”
A third commented: “Haha not me with a long haired dachshund as a first dog. She has been a breeze to train though, hardly ever barks – so I think I just got lucky!”
Meanwhile, someone else noted: “I would add chihuahuas to this list.”
