Dog poo ‘piling up everywhere’ after council refuses to replace vandalised bins

Poo bags scatter verges and paths in the seaside town of Weymouth (Picture: BPM)

Small mountains of dog poo are building across Dorset – because the council has refused to provide new bins.

Walkers have called the piles ‘horrible’ as dog mess is being repeatedly dumped alongside a footpath in Weymouth.

Despite pleas from residents, Dorset Council has refused to provide a new bin over fears it could be vandalised.

Instead a worker is sent to clear the piles, but locals have also been left removing the foul-smelling mess.

One resident, Brian Macdonald, 72, told DorsetLive that poo bags are being stacked on top each other, whilst some dog walkers no longer bother to pick up after their pet.

He said: ‘I think people see the mess and think they might as well throw it on the pile. It’s getting worse, we went around for a walk recently and there’s mess everywhere.

‘We always religiously pick it up because it’s the natural thing to do. It makes me laugh that people throw it in the hedge.

‘The mess is even on the middle of the path and some people are not using their bags. It’s so sad.’

According to Dorset Council, it was too costly to justify replacing a bin which was repeatedly vandalised.

They did however install new signs which asked pet owners to dispose of their dog’s waste at home.

The signage has since been removed by a member of the public.

The council said: ‘The bin off of Lorton Lane in Weymouth had become a regular target for vandals, having been lost around three times in as many months.

‘Dorset Council cannot financially justify repeatedly replacing the bin, and so it has been permanently removed.’

The council are still urging dog walkers to take their mess home with them, despite the mysterious removal of the new signs.

They said: ‘Signage was put up at the site to advise this and kindly ask dog owners to take their waste home, although those signs were also removed by a member of the public.

‘We are still checking the area every few days for any mess, as it’s apparent that some local dog owners feel the absence of a bin justified anti-social behaviour by littering the area with their dog poo bags.

‘Our message is simple – if you can’t find a bin for your litter please take it home and use your kerbside bins to dispose of it properly.’
