Explosion in Nangarhar Kills Three
Three people were killed in an explosion in eastern Afghanistan’s Nangarhar province on Saturday.
Local Taliban officials confirmed that the blast occurred in the Ghazi area of Kama district on Saturday afternoon.
According to the provincial security office, the explosion happened while workers were hammering and dismantling metal scrap, unaware that one piece contained live explosives. All three victims were killed instantly, and authorities have not released their identities.
The region remains heavily contaminated with unexploded ordnance from decades of conflict, making scrap-collecting a dangerous but common livelihood.
Residents report that lack of jobs and widespread poverty force many people, including children, to collect abandoned military materials for resale.
The incident comes days after the United Nations warned that reduced funding for demining programs in Afghanistan is leading to a sharp rise in civilian casualties.
UN agencies estimate that around 54 people are killed or injured every month by mines and leftover explosives, a number that could grow without renewed support.
With winter approaching and humanitarian assistance shrinking, families in parts of Afghanistan face worsening poverty, further increasing the likelihood that dangerous scrap collection will continue despite the risks.
