Louisiana's Fortified Roof Program reaches 10,000 roofs; next round of grants opens Nov. 12
BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Louisiana Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple announced Monday, Nov. 10, that the state's Fortified Roof Program has reached 10,000 roofs. The milestone highlights efforts to strengthen homes across Louisiana against severe weather.
“Achieving 10,000 FORTIFIED roofs in Louisiana is a massive win for the people of our state,” Temple said during a news conference. About 4,000 of those roofs were made available through grants, he added.
"Louisiana is the fastest-growing state when it comes to embracing FORTIFIED roofs," he added.
According to the Louisiana Department of Insurance, the next opportunity to apply for a roof grant starts Wednesday, Nov. 12, at 8 a.m. Registration closes Wednesday, Nov. 19, at 5 p.m.
There will be 1,000 grants available for people living in Louisiana's Coastal Zone, in addition to residents in Lake Charles, Sulphur and West Lake.
Participants will be randomly selected using a lottery system. Click here to apply.
Fortified roofs are specifically designed to prevent damage that commonly occurs during high winds, hurricanes, hailstorms and severe thunderstorms. They are built with stronger edges, sealed roof decks, impact-resistant shingles and are better attached with ring-shank nails.
