Pontoosuc Lake closes for blue-green algae bloom
PITTSFIELD, Mass. (NEWS10) -- Pontoosuc Lake in Pittsfield is closed to recreational sports, swimming, and more after health officials confirmed a blue-green algae bloom. In a public health advisory, Pittsfield officials said warning signs are being posted around the lake as the algae poses a possible health risk to people and pets.
Residents are asked not to swim in the lake or consume the lake water. Anyone who comes in contact with the lake should rinse off after coming into contact with the lake water.
Contact with a blue-green algae bloom can cause harmful health effects like skin, eye, or ear irritation, gastrointestinal problems like vomiting or diarrhea, muscle cramps, and nerve or liver damage in extreme cases. Pets who come in contact with the lake should be rinsed with clean water immediately to avoid the animal licking the algae off its fur.
Anyone experiencing symptoms of blue-green algae exposure should contact a health care provider or call Poison Control at (800) 222-1222. Pittsfield officials said the bloom will be monitored until it dissipates and cancels the public health advisory.
