NATIONAL hero Cde Luke Mushore, who was buried at the National Heroes Acre yesterday, has left a legacy of humility and integrity.
Unlike many politicians, he neither jostled for positions nor engaged in aggressive campaigning.
His reputation was enough to earn him the unwavering support of the electorate.
Voters trusted him not because of flashy campaigns, but due to his genuine commitment to their needs and well-being. The burial, presided over by President Mnangagwa, was a poignant reminder of a life dedicated to the service of the people.
As comrades and supporters gathered to pay their last respects, the numbers suggested that Cde Mushore embodied the spirit of the people he served.
His contribution to the liberation struggle and unwavering dedication to his community have left an indelible mark on the hearts of many.
Cde Mushore’s Chimurenga name was Cde Dick Joboringo.
Addressing mourners, Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Minister Kazembe Kazembe described the former Zanu PF chairman for Mashonaland Central Province as a dedicated cadre who worked tirelessly for his country.
Cde Mushore was a man of the people who was dedicated to national development and worked hard for his country and was loved by many.
“He is the only person who became chairperson of the province without campaigning. Every person who heard that our candidate was Cde Mushore would not have any objection, but would agree to his candidature. He was humble, unassuming and calm,” said Minister Kazembe, who is also Zanu PF Mashonaland Central Provincial chairperson.
“That shows that he was truly a man of the people and he was loved by many for the good work he was doing in communities and our country,” he said.
Cde Mushore’s grandchild, Ms Natalie Mushore, told mourners that the family was grateful for the honour bestowed on her grandfather by President Mnangagwa’s administration.
“Cde Luke Mushore, also known as Cde Dick Joboringo, was a family man who loved his family and worked hard for his family. He was also dedicated to his nation as he wanted to see it prosper.
“As a family, we are humbled and grateful to President Mnangagwa and the nation at large for the honour bestowed on our father, uncle and brother Cde Mushore on being declared a national hero.
“He was a pillar to the family, a guiding light, teaching us hardwork, for his siblings, he was a protector, whose devotion to the family never wavered,” she said.
In an interview on the sidelines of the burial, Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution responsible for Mashonaland Central Christopher Magomo said Cde Mushore was a decorated war veteran who fought hard to liberate the country.
“He was also instrumental during the land reform also known as the Third Chimurenga. He was a productive farmer and you could see at his farm the maize and wheat crop he was producing, which showed that he was contributing to our gross domestic product as Mashonaland Central.
“He was also very active and instrumental in Zanu PF party issues as he rose from cell level up to a Zanu PF provincial chairman and he ended up being a Central Committee member and was also an MP,” he said.
Zanu PF District Coordinating Committee chairperson for Muzarabani district Cde Zhemu Soda said the people of Mashonaland Central were consoled by the highest honour bestowed on Cde Mushore.
“Cde Mushore’s works have been recognised by the Government of Zimbabwe and as the people of Mashonaland Central and Muzarabani we are comforted by this huge honour.
“During his time, Cde Mushore fought many battles and was instrumental during the liberation struggle and during the land redistribution,” said Cde Soda, who is also Minister of National Housing and Social Amenities.
Thousands of mourners braved the chilly morning weather to pay their last respects to Cde Mushore.
The ceremony, filled with military honours after he received a 17-gun salute from the Zimbabwe National Army, reflected the profound respect held for him as a leader and a soldier.
Cde Mushore is survived by wife Mrs Chipo Mushore (nee Musiwapinda), 21 children and 61 grandchildren.
