The sons of legendary Zimbabwean footballer Chipo “Jack Roller” Tsodzo are striking a new chord, this time in the music world.
Emmanuel “Young Tsodzo” Tsodzo and his brother Tinashe “Timz Red X” Tsodzo are charting a different legacy from their father’s exploits on the football pitch, carving out a growing presence in Zimbabwe’s music industry. Their latest project, led by Young Tsodzo, is a powerful tribute track titled “Number 1 (Ezika Chipo Tsodzo)”, produced in collaboration with rising Kenyan Amapiano beat maker Mimmzyy.
Though their father’s legacy lies in football, the Tsodzo brothers are using melody and lyricism to continue uplifting the family name.
“This song is a tribute to my dad and my mission to uplift the Tsodzo surname. We’re using music to honour his legacy while creating our own identity,” said Young Tsodzo.
The song follows a legacy of musical tributes, notably Mawiza’s 2018 anthem “Chipo Tsodzo”, which became a cult hit among Highlanders (Bosso) fans and football lovers nationwide. Now, Young Tsodzo hopes to build on that impact, connecting with fans through rhythm and sentiment.
Young Tsodzo explained how the cross-border collaboration came to life.
“I found Mimmzyy’s beats on YouTube and reached out to him. He liked my vibe and sent me a pack of beats. I picked one, recorded here in Zimbabwe, and sent it back. It was all remote, but our energies aligned.”
Mimmzyy, known in East Africa’s Amapiano scene, praised Young Tsodzo for his vision.
“His passion stood out from day one. He has a unique sound and clear direction. I’m looking forward to what we’ll create together,” said the Kenyan producer.
Looking ahead, Young Tsodzo hopes to unite with Mawiza and his brother Timz Red X for a collaborative tribute, blending three creative minds into one legacy-driven project.
Through his label Manooza Records, Young Tsodzo also plans to continue building his catalogue and presence in the local and regional music scene, on his own terms, but with roots firmly planted in his family’s legacy. – Follow on X: @mbulelo_mpofu
