NYC Public Schools to remain open amid extreme heat warning
NEW YORK (PIX11) -- The first major heat wave of the summer has arrived in New York City, prompting an extreme heat warning to be issued, according to the National Weather Service.
The warning starts at noon Sunday and lasts through 8 p.m. Tuesday, officials said, and covers all five boroughs.
Despite the extreme heat warning, New York City Public Schools will remain open and fully operational, the New York City Department of Education announced on X.
While schools remain open, officials are encouraging students to wear lightweight clothing and to drink water often.
Schools have also been advised to move graduations, field days, and other outdoor activities indoors or to reschedule for a later date.
In addition to the extreme heat warning, families with young children should be cautious, as an Air Quality Health Advisory was issued for Monday.
The Air Quality Index value is expected to climb above 100 due to ozone. Young children should limit strenuous physical activity outdoors while the advisory remains in effect.
