Queensbury wins 7th Section 2 crown in a row thanks to late Duffy goal
CLIFTON PARK, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The Queensbury girls lacrosse team claimed a seventh consecutive Section 2 championship Thursday, beating Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake, 12-11, after Kady Duffy scored the game-winning goal with just six seconds to play.
Burnt Hills was first to crack the scoreboard. However, Queensbury quickly recovered thanks to three consecutive goals from Duffy.
While the defending champs would build a 4-1 lead, Burnt Hills battled back prior to the end of the first quarter, bringing the score to 4-3.
Burnt Hills quickly tied the game within two minutes of the start of the second stanza when Margaret Lescault found the back of the net to even the game at four. Queensbury outscored Burnt Hills, 3-1, the rest of the quarter to take a 7-5 lead to the break.
That trend continued in the third with Burnt Hills battling back to tie the game before Queensbury went on a run. The defending champs scored three unanswered goals to close the frame, taking a 10-7 lead to the final quarter.
Once again, Burnt Hills responded to start the fourth quarter, battling all the way back to even the contest with Lescault scoring the game-tying goal with less than 5:30 to play.
The game would remain even at 10 until the final minute of the contest. Gianna Marcantonio found the back of the net with 49 seconds to play, giving Queensbury the one-goal edge. Lescault countered just 12 seconds later, tying the game for Burnt Hills.
With just 10 seconds to play, Duffy drew a foul and earned a free-position chance. The University of North Carolina commit converted with six seconds remaining - her 7th goal of the game - to win the contest and secure the championship.
With the win, Queensbury earns the Class C championship and advances to the New York State tournament.
