Council moves to restore non- operational traffic lights

HARARE City Council has reported that there are 69 signalised intersections in the central business district (CBD) of Harare, with only 48 operational and the remaining 31 not working.
In a statement issued today, council said the malfunctioning robots were a result of power supply issues.
“Factors contributing to the malfunctioning signals include faulty controllers and accessories, vandalism at several locations, and power supply issues from the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC),” it said.
It also noted that some traffic lights were decommissioned during road dualisation projects overseen by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development.
In response to these challenges, the City of Harare said it is actively pursuing repairs for the existing non-functional installations.
It said it is currently engaged in procurement processes for necessary parts and accessories.
“The City is also in contact with ZETDC to ensure power is restored to critical intersections,” the Council stated, highlighting the urgent need to address issues at busy junctions such as Sam Nujoma Street and Samora Machel Avenue.
Looking ahead, the Harare City Council plans to implement a comprehensive Traffic Management System designed to streamline traffic flow and improve safety.
The modern system aims to synchronise traffic signals and include surveillance features to ensure compliance with traffic regulations.
In the interim, it said municipal police will enhance their presence at major intersections during peak hours to assist with traffic management and mitigate congestion.
