Topeka bridge to shut down for months
TOPEKA (KSNT) - Work crews are preparing to shut down a bridge in the Oakland neighborhood for several months this summer repairs.
Mark Schreiner with the City of Topeka said in a press release on May 29 that workers with Bettis Asphalt and Construction Company will be full closing the Branner Bridge next month. The closure is expected to start on Monday, June 2 and last for 110 days or around three-and-a-half months.
Schreiner said the closure includes Branner Street from Southeast Third Street to about 250 feet north of Northeast Atchison Avenue. Workers will replace pavement in the road, approach slabs along with abutment and pier expansion ports on the bridge and nearby streets.
Drivers are encouraged to follow one of two detour routes depending on whether they are traveling north or south while this project is ongoing. The detour routes include:
- Northbound traffic.
- Travel east along Southeast Fourth Street to Southeast Golden Avenue.
- Head north to Northeast Seward Avenue.
- Lastly, head west back to Northeast Branner Street.
- Southbound traffic.
- Travel east along Northeast Seward Avenue to Northeast Golden Avenue.
- Go south to Southeast Fourth Street.
- Finally, head west back to Southeast Branner Street.
The City of Topeka's Public Works Department previously reported the budget for this project is just under $825,000. The citywide half-cent sales tax and federal dollars will fund the project.
