Man charged after officer-involved shooting in Topeka
TOPEKA (KSNT) - Prosecutors are charging a local man after he was involved in a shootout with Topeka police earlier this month.
Shawnee County District Attorney Mike Kagay said in a press release that a 33-year-old Topeka man is charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer following a shooting incident with three Topeka Police Department officers on May 23. He is also charged with aggravated domestic battery and domestic battery.
Police were called around midnight on May 23 to a home in the 1500 block of Southwest 24th Street on reports of a past domestic violence situation. TPD officers tried to make contact with the 33-year-old in connection to that incident by trying to talk to him. However, the man allegedly opened a door and opened fire on police with a handgun with three officers returning fire.
The 33-year-old eventually surrendered and was arrested. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation was called to look into the situation in the aftermath of the shooting.
