Iestyn Thomas Signs Off
After two and a half seasons with Pontypridd RFC’s media team, Iestyn Thomas has stepped down from his role at the Club with his university studies having now come to an end. Iestyn joined the team in December 2022 whilst also studying for his Sports Journalism degree at USW in Cardiff.
Whilst part of Ponty’s media team Iestyn has written numerous match reports and has helped co-produce the Club’s Rugby Show on local radio station GTFM along with Guto Davies. Over the last thirty months Iestyn has interviewed a large number of current and ex-players, coaches and club officials playing an integral part in the functioning of the weekly broadcast. At the conclusion of his studies at the University of South Wales Iestyn has now finished in his role with the Club.
On his time with the Ponty Media Team, Iestyn said: “It’s been a pleasure to have played a small part within such a great club and the last two and a half seasons have gone a lot quicker than I expected.
“Firstly I’d like to thank Geraint Thomas and Guto Davies for their help and guidance during my time at the club, as well as the players and coaches that I have spoken to on the Ponty Rugby Show for the last two seasons and being so willing to talk despite their busy schedules.
“I’m not sure what exactly are my next steps as I seek full time employment within the sports journalism industry, but I know I’ll have a team to root for in the Welsh Premiership! – Diolch.”
Head of Ponty RFC’s media, Geraint Thomas said: “I can’t thank Iestyn enough for his huge contribution to the Club’s media team over the last two and a half years. He’s worked tirelessly travelling the full width of South Wales following Pontypridd to write match reports, and his contribution to the GTFM Ponty Rugby Show has been massive as well – all this work being done in his own spare time.
I hope he won’t mind me saying but during the domestic shake-up in the semi-pro game twelve months ago Iestyn was approached by an SRC club to go and work for them, but he rejected the approach to remain with Pontypridd RFC which was fantastic loyalty from him. He’s been a pleasure to work with and I wish him all the very best for his future career in journalism.”
With his degree in journalism now under his belt, Iestyn will now pursue a career in the media and Pontypridd RFC would like to wish him well for the future.
Diolch yn fawr Iestyn
