Rick Derringer is dead. Known for “Hold On Sloopy,” “Rock And Roll, Hoochie Coo” and Hulk Hogan’s theme song, “Real American,” Derringer was a Zelig of the liner notes, playing guitar, producing, and writing songhs for an array of artists, including with Johnny and Edgar Winter, Bette Midler, Meat Loaf, Cyndi Lauper, Barbra Streisand, and “Weird Al” Yankovic. Derringer’s death was confirmed by his longtime friend and caretaker, Tony Wilson, who reported Derringer’s death on Facebook without a cause of death. Derringer was 77.
“Renowned guitarist and entertainer Rick Derringer passed on at 8:09 PM on May 26th, surrounded by his loving wife, singer-songwriter, and band of 28 years, Jenda Derringer, his caretaker and close friend, Tony Wilson,” Wilson posted to Facebook. “With a career spanning six decades, The Legendary Rick Derringer left an indelible mark on the music industry as a guitarist, singer-songwriter, and producer.”
Derringer was, indeed, a rock ‘n roll lifer. Born in Celenia, Ohio, on August 5, 1947, Derringer received his first electric guitar for his ninth birthday and immediately put it to use. Within a decade, he was at the top of the Billboard charts with his group, The McCoys, and their song “Hang On Sloopy,” which became a staple of Ohio State Buckeyes games. The McCoys would collectively join Johnny Winter to form the group Johnny Winter And. Later, Derringer would join Winter’s brother, Edgar Winter, before releasing his first solo record, All American Boy, featuring his hit song “Rock And Roll, Hoochie Coo,” which by that time had already appeared on two Winter-related albums.
Derringer continued to make waves within the industry as a guitarist and producer. In between Winter albums, he played with Steely Dan before linking up with Meat Loaf songwriter Jim Steinman. Working with Steinman, Derringer played guitar on Bonnie Tyler’s “Total Eclipse Of The Heart” and Cyndi Lauper’s True Colors. Lauper brought him in to work on the WWE’s (née WWF) The Wrestling Album, for which Derringer wrote several themes, including Hulk Hogan’s “Real American.” Throughout the ’80s, Derringer was a guitarist to the stars, backing up Barbra Streisand, Kiss, and Bette Midler on guitar. Derringer was one of “Weird Al” Yankovic’s earliest collaborators, winning his first and only Grammy for “Eat It.”
“I’m very sad to say that my friend, rock guitar legend Rick Derringer, has passed,” Yankovic wrote on Instagram. “Rick produced my first 6 albums and played guitar on my earliest recordings, including the solo on ‘Eat It.’ He had an enormous impact on my life, and will be missed greatly.”
