There was “mention” of Carpenter being scouted for a role in the gestating film during a conversation between Craymer and Deadline, the outlet reports. While Craymer remained mostly tight-lipped about her plans for the threequel, she did let slip that if Carpenter were to travel to Greece, “she’d be a goddess or some relation who would look very much like Meryl Streep.” It would be a pretty great fit. Carpenter has already covered ABBA multiple times during her shows, and she does look a whole lot like a Sheridan relative. (Deadline also points out that she’s “friendly” with Mamma Mia! and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again star Amanda Seyfried.) Plus, “Juno” basically sounds like something young Donna would have sung while she seduced one of the three possible fathers during that fateful summer. This writer is all for it, but “it’ll happen when it happens,” in Craymer’s words.
Beyond Carpenter’s potential participation, Craymer was largely reticent. A script has been written, “but I’m not going there,” she said. If it does happen, the team is at least striving to make the movie as delightful as the first two. “I think the world needs another fun experience. Cinema is having a tough time. [It] wouldn’t be a big expensive Marvel movie, but people would go,” Craymer added. There may even be a Mamma Mia! TV series one day, but the producer is “not doing that now… I’m just saying it could happen.”
While she didn’t reveal much more than Craymer, Christine Baranski, who plays Dynamos member Tanya in the films, also recently weighed in on the possibility of a threequel in an interview with RadioTimes.com. “We’d all want to do it, but that doesn’t mean there’s a green light on it,” she said. “I am loathe to say yes, there’s going to be a Mamma Mia! 3. But we would all love for there to be a number 3, absolutely.” Count this writer in as another member of that camp.
