New Mexico couple takes wedding photos in front of tornado
PORTALES, N.M. (KLBK) – William and Daynnely Carrillo got married on May 25. Their wedding day was just how they pictured it, too — with one major exception.
Bad weather arose near their wedding venue in Portales, New Mexico, that Sunday, and soon a tornado was spotted off in the distance. But instead of finding shelter, the couple took advantage of the moment by taking wedding photos in front of it.
"The ceremony was going to be outside and then everything else was going to be inside. So, it was going to be 4 o'clock, and then basically throughout the whole ceremony we were getting married, we said our vows and then [the weather] just switched," Daynnely Carrillo said.
"It just got windy and then it just got cloudy. It just instantly happened, and we just said, 'OK, let's go take pictures.'"
Wedding photographer Chesnea Clemmons said she and the couple deemed it safe enough to go outside, considering they were a safe distance from the tornado.
"It's just an iconic moment. … You were never going to get that opportunity again," Clemmons said. "And, I mean, being the plains, we all are pretty weather-aware, and so we knew it wasn't close enough for us to be in complete danger."
Clemmons said she's been bombarded with phone calls and interview requests since posting the photo online.
"It's just been a crazy whirlwind for the last about 48 hours," Clemmons said.
Her services have also been requested by Facebook users hoping to capture their own once-in-a-lifetime photos — however improbable that may be.
"Next time you shoot our office photos, I’d like a tornado, please," one follower joked.
