Accidental blaze damages two units at Meadows West Apartments
LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- An accidental fire in Lafayette Parish caused damage to two apartments and minor injuries for an occupant.
Lafayette firefighters responded to the Meadows West Apartments on 201 High Meadows Boulevard for a reported apartment fire at 4:20 pm. Officials said when they arrived smoke was coming from the apartment.
Firefighters entered the unit and conducted a search for occupants. The only occupant, at the time, exited the apartment as firefighters arrived.
Officials located the fire in the kitchen and extinguished it within ten minutes.
Officials said the kitchen sustained heavy fire and water damage while other rooms in the dwelling had smoke damage. The adjoining apartment also sustained smoke and minor water damage.
According to officials the occupant was cooking prior to falling asleep. He was awakened by the alarm and discovered the kitchen on fire. He attempted to extinguish the fire. While doing so, he sustained minor burns to his hands. He was evaluated on the scene and later transported to a local hospital. The fire was ruled an accident.
