Albany Academy wins first Section 2 title since 2014
CLIFTON PARK, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The Albany Academy girls lacrosse team won its first Section 2 championship in 11 years on Wednesday, defeating Voorheesville, 13-9, in the Class D final. The Bears were powered by six goals from Sydney Morrison and four goals from Maggie Zeyak, leading the team to the championship victory.
The Bears started just the way they wanted to, opening the game on a 5-0 run thanks to scores from Leah Flaherty, Natalie Levy, Morrison and a pair of goals from Zeyak. The Blackbirds would strike back in the final seconds of the opening frame when Lauren Giglio netted a goal with just three seconds left in the first.
Albany Academy was able to maintain the momentum in the second despite the late score from Voorheesville, outscoring the Blackbirds 2-1 in the frame. The Bears carried a 7-2 advantage into the half.
It was Voorheesville that made a run out of halftime. After the two sides traded goals early in the third quarter, the Blackbirds cut into the deficit late in the frame. Violet Cillis scored back-to-back goals for Voorheesville in less than 20 seconds to bring the score to 8-6 going to the fourth.
In the final frame, the Bears took back the momentum and put the game away. The final frame was headlined by Morrison, who tallied a fourth quarter hat trick to secure the championship for Albany Academy.
With the win, Albany Academy claims the Class D championship and advances to the New York State tournament.
