Niskayuna rolls to Class A championship
CLIFTON PARK, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The Niskayuna girls lacrosse team claimed the Section 2, Class A championship on Wednesday with an 11-6 win over the defending champs, Saratoga. The Silver Warriors were led by a seven-goal performance from Madelyn Cummings that helped Niskayuna build a 10-2 lead in the third quarter.
It was a back-and-forth start to the contest with Abigail Licht opening the scoring for Nisky in the first, before Josslyn Gould responded with the first Saratoga goal of the game. The two sides traded goals later in the quarter, but Ava Roemer put the Silver Warriors in front 3-2 with a late goal to end the first.
With a one-goal lead, Cummings took over for Niskayuna, scoring three goals in a matter of two minutes to put the Silver Warriors in charge. Nisky would add another score before the half to take a 7-2 edge to the break.
The halftime break did not slow down the Niskayuna attack, Cummings scored again less than a minute into the third quarter, sparking a run that saw the Silver Warriors build their advantage to 10-2. Niskayuna used the large lead to cruise in the fourth quarter to the Section 2 championship victory.
With the win, Niskayuna claims the Class A championship and advances to play in the New York State tournament.
