DEC: Forest ranger rescues hikers on hallucinogenic mushrooms
NORTH ELBA, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- A forest ranger helped rescue two people on Cascade Mountain who reported the third member of their hiking party had died. The Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) said the two hikers, who ate hallucinogenic mushrooms, called 911 around 9 a.m. on May 24.
After calling 911, the DEC said the two people found the Cascade Summit Steward, telling them they were lost. DEC officials also said the steward determined the people were in an altered state of mind before the third member of the hiking party called, saying they were not injured.
The DEC said Forest Ranger Praczkajlo helped the two hikers down the mountain to a waiting ambulance and New York State Police. Praczkajlo helped the third hiker back to their campground. Officials said no charges were filed in connection with the incident.
