St. Clare’s Hospital pensioners awaiting trial date after hearing
SCHNECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – Former employees of St. Clare’s Hospital have fought for their pensions after the hospital closed nearly two decades ago. After a hearing Thursday, they'll have to wait a little longer to find out when the case will go to trial.
The court held a virtual hearing at 11:00 A.M. Acting Supreme Court Justice Vincent Versaci is expected to issue a court order with the trial date.
Attorneys for the plaintiffs said they are optimistic the trial will start sometime this year. The case has been moving through the State of New York Supreme Court, County of Schenectady, for six years.
The pensioners are represented by the Attorney General’s Office and attorneys from the AARP Foundation.
NEWS10 was there on April 17 when the judge ruled a trial could go forward. At that time, attorneys for the defendants, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany, addressed the plaintiffs that were present in the courtroom.
“And to have them say to us that they’re not connected to us, that they’re not responsible, it almost feels like they’re saying none of this happened and we made it all up and that’s terribly hurtful,” said Mary Hartshorne, who worked at St. Clare’s Hospital for almost 30 years.
Again, pensioners are still waiting for the court order to learn the trial date and how long the trial will last. Hartshorne has been outspoken on the case on behalf of the pensioners.
“This St. Clare’s thing is my heart,” said Hartshorne.“This whole thing means so much and I want so badly for us to get something. I don’t want it to be something where we end up having nothing.”
NEWS10 will continue to follow this case to bring you the latest.
