Tottenham told to choose from three managers if Ange Postecoglou leaves
Danny Murphy has had his say on what Tottenham fans want to happen with Ange Postecoglou, and the pundit has told Daniel Levy that one factor should be a non-negotiable when it comes to identifying the Australian’s successor if he is to be sacked.
The Spurs boss is now on a well-earned holiday after a long and difficult season, which has ended historically with the club’s Europa League triumph, which is Tottenham’s first European trophy in 41 years.
Daniel Levy faces a very difficult decision on Postecoglou’s future after the Australian elevated himself to a hero status among the Spurs faithful by breaking the club’s trophy drought.
Over the past couple of days, various reports have indicated that the expectation in Hotspur Way is for Postecoglou to be sacked, although the Australian is hoping that the emotions of the Europa League win instigate a change of heart for Levy.
Danny Murphy urges Tottenham to look within the Premier League for Ange Postecoglou’s replacement
Murphy believes that if Spurs are going to part ways with the 59-year-old and head in a different direction, they should only consider managers who are proven in the Premier League.
The pundit feels that it will be a major risk to appoint someone without any experience coaching in England, and he predicted that one of Thomas Frank, Marco Silva and Oliver Glasner will end up at N17.
The former Tottenham midfielder said on talkSPORT BET: “Should Spurs get rid of Ange Postecoglou, they’ve got Thomas Frank, Marco Silva and Oliver Glasner on their doorstep. They’re all very capable managers, they know the Premier League and they’ve all produced fit, well-organised, adaptable teams at their respective clubs. I think any of those three would thrive in the Spurs job with the players they’d have at their disposal.
“They may look further afield for a new manager and then who knows where they might go? Ultimately, if they make a change then I feel like it should be someone who is already working well in the Premier League – if they can get them, that is.
“You can come in from abroad and have success, we’ve seen Arne Slot do it this season. However, I just think it is more practical to have a manager who knows what he’s coming up against straight away. I think one of Frank, Silva or Glasner will end up at Spurs.”
Murphy claims Spurs fans want Postecoglou to stay
However, Murphy is not opposed to the idea of Spurs giving Postecoglou a third season, pointing out that he is the man who has finally delivered silverware to the club after several big-name managers have failed to do so.
The 48-year-old remarked that the majority of the Tottenham fan base now wants to see the Australian stay after what he has just achieved.
Murphy added: “Tottenham have tried so many different types of managers in the past. From experienced winners like Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte, to more pragmatic coaches like Nuno Espirito Santo, and then the complete opposite in Ange Postecoglou. It’s difficult to nail down what kind of manager they’ll go for next.
“You of course want a manager with a philosophy, but they also need to be adaptable. You want someone who’s experienced and knows how to win – there are a lot of boxes you want ticked.
“In the end, the only one who has actually brought silverware to the club is Ange, so there will be a good section of the fanbase who want the club to stick with him. The irony is, they won the Europa League final by being solid and pragmatic. He obviously knows how to win like that, as do the players, which makes you wonder why he doesn’t do that more often.”
