MLS drops historic news about Lionel Messi after Inter Miami-Montreal clash
Inter Miami CF is finally back in the win column in MLS play, and Wednesday night’s 4–2 victory over CF Montréal added another historic milestone to Lionel Messi’s legendary career.
Messi and longtime strike partner Luis Suárez both scored twice in the home win at Chase Stadium. The former FC Barcelona teammates also assisted each other once, putting on a show that reminded fans of their golden years in Spain.
The standout moment came during the fourth and final goal: Suárez played a slick give-and-go with Messi at the edge of Montréal’s penalty area, setting up the Argentine maestro for a calm chip over the goalkeeper.
Messi’s brace and assist sealed three valuable points for Inter Miami, lifting them to sixth place in the Eastern Conference with 26 points (7 wins, 5 draws). Remarkably, the Herons have played one fewer game than the five teams currently above them in the standings.
The Argentine captain also reached a new milestone: he now has 29 goals and 21 assists in regular-season MLS play, becoming the first player in club history to reach 50 goal contributions.

“Lionel Messi became the first player in club history to produce 50 goal contributions (29 goals, 21 assists) in regular season play, doing so in just his 37th game,” announced the official MLS PR account after the match.
Messi has tallied 11 of those 50 contributions this 2025 season alone—scoring eight goals and providing five assists. His stunning free-kick goal against the Philadelphia Union last weekend earned Goal of the Matchday honors and also moved him into third place all-time with 67 career free-kick goals.
While Messi already holds the title of Inter Miami’s all-time leading scorer, his tally of 47 goals in 58 appearances across all competitions still feels modest compared to his staggering output for FC Barcelona, where he racked up 672 goals and 303 assists in 778 matches.
