Red Sox Leader Bluntly Criticizes Club After Another One-Run Loss
The Red Sox are starting to feel like a snake-bitten baseball team.
On top of multiple injuries to key players, Boston seemingly hasn’t caught any lucky breaks. Monday’s 3-2 loss in Milwaukee marked the Red Sox’s 14th one-run loss of the season, and we haven’t even flipped the calendar to June yet. To put that troubling trend into more perspective, over 48% of Boston’s losses to date were by a single run.
Stockpiling narrow defeats is starting to get to Rob Refsnyder, who joined manager Alex Cora in expressing frustration about the lingering struggles after the Memorial Day matchup. While the veteran outfielder acknowledged the Red Sox are working hard, he didn’t sugarcoat the current state of the club.
“Yeah, we just got to figure it out,” Refsnyder told reporters, as seen on NESN. “There are some good at-bats here and there, but we’re just not getting the job done. It’s not for a lack of effort or work ethic, game planning. We’re not doing it. We suck right now.”
On paper, Boston has a promising opportunity to turn the tide ahead. Starting Tuesday, Cora’s side plays eight straight games against sub-.500 teams before it visits the Bronx for its first series of the season against the New York Yankees.
But as the first two months of the campaign proved, the Red Sox haven’t earned the luxury of being able to virtually pencil in victories against subpar opponents.
