Over 100 Afghan citizens released from Pakistani prisons
Over 100 Afghan citizens were released from Pakistani prisons after being detained for up to 15 days, returning to Afghanistan.
In the ongoing crackdown on Afghan migrants in Pakistan, the Ministry of Refugees and Repatriates of the Interim Government of Afghanistan announced the release of 104 Afghan detainees from Pakistani prisons. The Ministry reported on Monday, May 5, that these migrants had been detained from various parts of Pakistan for periods ranging from one to 15 days before being returned to Afghanistan.
Upon their return, the migrants were provided with assistance to support their reintegration into Afghanistan’s society. This release comes amid a continuous flow of Afghan migrants being deported from Pakistan back to their home country.
Meanwhile, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) announced that in April alone, more than 250,000 Afghan migrants returned from Iran and Pakistan under dire conditions. Among them, 96,000 individuals were forcibly deported.
UNHCR’s recent report also highlights that from 2023 to the present, over 3.4 million Afghan migrants have either been forcibly expelled or have been forced to return to Afghanistan from these two countries.
The ongoing deportation of Afghan migrants and the pressure they face upon return is raising concerns about their well-being and reintegration challenges. The Afghan administration, alongside international organizations, is being urged to ensure proper support systems for these returning migrants to alleviate their hardships.
The continued migration crisis underscores the necessity for comprehensive policies that address the root causes of displacement, such as security, economic instability, and political uncertainty. International cooperation and long-term solutions are essential to resolving the plight of Afghan migrants.
