Mother and daughter conquer breast cancer, celebrate Mother's Day
NEW JERSEY (PIX11) -- This Mother's Day, mother and daughter Donna and Genna Karp-Shriber have a lot to be grateful for, as it's their first Mother's Day being cancer-free.
Both were diagnosed with breast cancer as they were preparing for Genna's wedding day last spring.
For Donna, this was her second time battling cancer. Her first battle also came at age 26 in the 1990s when she was pregnant with her first child.
A sad twist of fate, it’s exactly the same age as when her daughter received the diagnosis, also at 26.
They discovered they both carry a dangerous gene that increases their likelihood of breast cancer for both mother and daughter. They say their doctor, Dr. David Anderson, and the team at Mount Sinai saved their lives.
Together they walked down the aisle in time for Genna’s big day last April.
Every day, they say they cherish being alive and have an important message for other women: Prevention is key.
