New traffic signals with flashing yellow arrows installed in west Columbus
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) -- Several new traffic signals with flashing yellow arrows are being installed in west Columbus -- something officials hope will reduce the number of left-turn crashes.
Ten new traffic signals are being installed at several intersections along Hilliard Rome Road and Roberts Road.
The new signals include flashing yellow arrows. They will not only provide more opportunities for traffic to make left turns, but also improve safety. The flashing yellow arrow replaces the solid green for left turns.
The flashing yellow allows traffic to turn left, but only when there is no oncoming traffic or pedestrians.
The Ohio Department of Transportation said the new signals also give traffic engineers more options to keep traffic moving, depending on the time of day.
“The flashing yellow arrow has been proven to reduce left-turn crashes and minimize travel delays by providing more turning opportunities,” according to ODOT.
After monitoring the new installations, officials will determine if there are other intersections in the “high-injury network” where the new lights can be installed.
Drivers should keep in mind that when they see a flashing yellow arrow, it means oncoming traffic has a solid green light and has the right-of-way. Drivers with a flashing yellow arrow must yield to oncoming traffic, pedestrians, and bicyclists.
The flashing arrow will turn solid before the light turns red and drivers should prepare to stop.
