Newcastle 4-1 Man Utd player ratings: Three 3/10s and four 4/10s disappoint, Amorim shifts focus to Europa League
Manchester United suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat to Newcastle United at St. James’ Park in the Premier League on Sunday.
United’s head coach Ruben Amorim made several changes to his lineup, including giving starts to Altay Bayindir and Harry Amass, but the adjustments could not halt the tide.
Sandro Tonali struck early for the hosts, finishing off a brilliant assist from Alexander Isak to give Newcastle the lead.
However, United responded swiftly on the counter-attack, with Alejandro Garnacho finishing neatly to level things up before the break.
The second half saw Harvey Barnes make an immediate impact, firing Newcastle ahead 2-1 with a clinical finish.
His pace was on full display moments later, as he added another to make it 3-1 and leave United reeling.
A defensive blunder from United then allowed Bruno Guimaraes to seal the win for the Magpies, putting the final nail in the coffin with a fourth goal.
Player Ratings
Altay Bayindir – 3/10
The 26-year-old made his Premier League debut today.
He made a stunning save to deny Isak in the first half but handed Bruno Guimaraes a gift-wrapped goal.
Noussair Mazraoui – 4/10
His costly slip presented Barnes the chance to grab his second goal of the evening.
Victor Lindelof – 3/10
The Swedish defender was far too passive, giving Isak the space he needed to assist early.
He was left in the dust as Barnes bulldozed past him to extend Newcastle’s lead.
Leny Yoro – 4/10
The teenager has been in fine form over the last few weeks but endured a very tough evening.
Diogo Dalot – 6/10
He bagged an assist for Garnacho’s goal, showing his attacking flair, but was ruthlessly exposed at the back.
Livramento tore past him with ease to set up the second goal.
Harry Amass – 6/10
The 18-year-old kept things simple on his full debut.
Manuel Ugarte – 5/10
He earned a harsh booking for a sliding challenge on Tino Livramento and gave away the ball sloppily for the first goal.
Bruno Fernandes – 6/10
Fernandes carved out an early opportunity for Zirkzee with a clever pass, but could not steady a side that looked destined for collapse.
Amorim pulled him off with ten minutes to go, clearly saving his skipper’s legs for the looming showdown with Lyon.
Christian Eriksen – 3/10
Stationed in the midfield pivot, the Denmark international failed to offer any real defensive solidarity.
He was conspicuously absent for both of Barnes’ goals, leaving the midfield exposed and unprotected.
Alejandro Garnacho – 8/10
The youngster showed real composure as he slotted past Pope with pinpoint precision, finishing his goal with aplomb.
His substitution in the 55th minute came as a major surprise.
Joshua Zirkzee – 7/10
Zirzkee linked up brilliantly with Fernandes in a moment of dazzling interplay, forcing a fine save from Nick Pope.
Unfortunately, his evening was cut short by a suspected hamstring issue, and he was forced off.
Subtitutions
Mason Mount – 4/10
Mount was hardly involved after his introduction as Newcastle ran riot in the second half.
Rasmus Hojlund – 5/10
Hojlund struggled to offer the same focal point that Zirkzee had provided before his injury setback.
Patrick Dorgu – 4/10
He lacked composure, further adding to the chaos at the back.
Luke Shaw – 6/10
The England international made his first appearance since early December.
Kobbie Mainoo – NA
Too late to rate.
