Tottenham first-half player ratings vs Wolves – A rare 1/10 rating for senior star

The half-time whistle has sounded in the West Midlands, signalling the end of the opening forty-five minutes in the clash between Wolves and Tottenham Hotspur – and it’s now time for our first-half player ratings.

Spurs are back in Premier League action after their 1-1 Europa League quarter-final first-leg draw against Eintracht Frankfurt at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Now, a trip to an in-form Wolverhampton Wanderers awaits, as Spurs will be hoping to secure a victory against a side they have failed to win against in their last three attempts.

Throughout the first half, we analysed each player’s individual performance, rating them on a scale of 1-10. Let’s take a look at our Tottenham player ratings…

Tottenham’s first-half player ratings vs Wolves

Guglielmo Vicario: It has been a dreadful opening forty-five minutes for Guglielmo Vicario, who started the game very nervously. The opening goal from Wolves saw the return of a familiar problem – the Italian’s mishaps when it comes to set-pieces. Moments later, he gave the ball away rather cheaply in his box and was lucky not to be punished. His handling of the cross for Wolves’ second ultimately led to a Spence own goal. 1.

Ben Davies: A quiet outing so far from Davies, as there has been little defending to do throughout the first half. But he has been solid alongside Romero. However, both centre-backs were nowhere to be seen for the second goal. 5.

Cristian Romero: Aside from the opening error from Vicario, Spurs’ defence hasn’t really been threatened, as Viktor Perreira’s men are looking to hit Tottenham on the break, leaving Romero with little to do. He has been solid with his passing out from the back. 6.

Archie Gray: Archie Gray is playing as a full-back in this clash and has looked to overlap Brennan Johnson at times. The second goal did come from a cross from his side, he needs to stay tighter on his man. 5.

Djed Spence: Spence definitely looks like one who is trying to make things happen. He’s the left-back in this clash, but has the licence to step into midfield. No real threat from him just yet, and his passing has been loose at times. However, the second goal came after Vicario’s poor attempt at dealing with a cross hit the defender for an own goal. 3.

Yves Bissouma: Yves has had a solid 45 minutes for Tottenham in the West Midlands, tidy in that pivot role with his passing and defensive work. The midfielder’s long-range strike in the opening 20 minutes was the closest Spurs came to a goal. 7.

Pape Matar Sarr: Sarr has been rather quiet in this game. He did have an opportunity to let fly from the edge of the Wolves box, but it was blocked. Needs more energy and running from him. 3.

James Maddison: James Maddison seems to be involved in a lot of Tottenham’s attacking play, picking up the ball in the pockets and trying to play defence-splitting passes. A few have found their target, while others have not. Definitely needs to improve in the second half. 4.

Brennan Johnson: Johnson has had his moments in this match, though they’ve been few and far between. His best chance came from a defence-splitting pass from Romero, only for the Welshman to sky his half-volley. 4.

Dominic Solanke: It’s been more of the same for Solanke in a Spurs shirt this first half. The Englishman is once more working hard and making runs into the channels. However, yet again, no real effort at goal. 5.

Mathys Tel: Tel has tried to influence the game on the right and looks like the one Tottenham attacker willing to run at his man at least. He managed a chance early on from a Johnson cross out wide, but his effort was blocked. 5.
