The two-ingredient hack that will make stubborn gravel weeds disappear – and it works in less than 24 hours
NOW that Brits are spending more time outside with spring finally in full swing, many will be looking to work on their outdoor spaces.
And with the sun shining, many people might begin to notice weeds growing on their patios.
But you don’t have to fork out on expensive products to get rid of them, as gardening fans have revealed a simple two-ingredient hack that they claim will make stubborn gravel weeds disappear.
Even better, they say it works in less than 24 hours.
George Davis Turf, who is known as @georgedaviesturf on Instagram, shared a simple and super cheap hack for dealing with these stubborn invaders.
They recommend mixing rock salt with water in a bottle and spraying it over your gravel.
This mixture acts as a natural attacker that gets directly to the root, causing the weeds to dehydrate and wither away.
However, experts have warned that although rock salt can be effective, it doesn’t differentiate between your plants and weeds, so ensure the salt water does not come into contact with your plants.
They recommend: “Use it well away from your garden when rain can’t spread the salt to your grass.”
And that’s not the only hack you can use on weeds in your garden.
There is a clever method, which costs less than £1, and has been praised for it’s effectiveness.
A TikTok user, known as @Lovelello, suggested using a wire brush to scrub away stubborn weeds from outdoor spaces.
Once the weeds have been thoroughly scrubbed, she recommended pouring boiling water over the area to prevent them from growing back.
Wire brushes are a handy household tool that can be purchased for as little as 79p from Home Bargains and other major retailers.
This simple approach offers a cost-effective alternative to expensive weed-killing products.
Why you shouldn't use fizzy drinks as a weed killer
THE internet is full of gardening hacks - some incredibly useful, and others just downright stupid.
Fabulous’ Associate Editor and gardening enthusiast, Rebecca Miller, has shared her thoughts.
“The latest suggestion is to use fizzy drinks as a weed killer – but this will cause more harm than good.
Fizzy drinks contain acidic ingredients which, yes, will effectively kill weeds – but also any other plant it touches.
More importantly, it will impact your soil quality because of the artificial sugar content.
While this may not seem like a bad thing because plants need sugar to survive, the issue is, the sugar in fizzy drinks, is the wrong type of sugar plants need, and it cannot be absorbed by them.
Instead, the plant which has been covered in soda will pull water from the roots of surrounding plants, causing them all to become hydrated.
So yes, you might kill a weed or two, but you’ll also see a lot of your other plants and flowers dying.
To add to this, the microbes and underground critters that like the sugars found in fizzy drinks, are often not good for plants – and some of them can be actively harmful.
If you have pesky weeds, the old fashioned way is the best. Get a kitchen knife, a weed puller or brush and remove them by hand.
But remember – a weed is just a plant growing in a location you don’t want it to.”
