Experts help rank two Portland coffee shops among the world's best
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — While a cafe from down under was named the No. 1 coffee shop across the globe, two Portland businesses were recognized among the world’s best roasters as well.
For the inaugural year, The World’s 100 Best Coffee Shops were revealed at CoffeeFest Madrid earlier in February.
Australia’s “Toby’s Estate Coffee Roasters” was crowned the best overall, followed by Arkansas’ and Austria’s Gota Coffee Experts. Proud Mary Coffee — which was listed for its Australia outpost, but has a Portland location — and the Norway-based Tim Wendelboe rounded out the top five.
Push X Pull was the first local coffee shop featured on the list, at No. 34. The cafe opened its flagship location on Southeast Stark Street in 2018, and has since opened another business on Southeast 6th Avenue and in Seattle.
Portland-founded chain Stumptown Coffee Roasters was recognized as the 52-best coffee shop in the world. The company debuted its flagship cafe in Division Street in 1999. It now has several other locations in the city, along with New York, Los Angeles and Japan.
According to the website, The World’s 100 Best Coffee Shops are determined by assessing factors like customer service, barista expertise and consistency.
“By meticulously applying these criteria, we aim to present a definitive guide to the best coffee shops around the world, celebrating those that excel in every aspect of the coffee experience,” the site reads.
The selection process starts with online public voting for coffee enthusiasts worldwide, followed by judgments from an expert panel including baristas and roasters. Organizers then count the votes from both the public and experts using a weighted system, with the panel making up 70% of the final scores.
Voters are also able to nominate their favorite coffee shops. The most-nominated businesses are added to a shortlist, and the top 100 cafes are ranked using combined scores.
