Pope Francis’ Medical Condition Has Worsened, Placed on Non-Invasive Ventilation
The Vatican has said that Pope Francis’ medical condition has taken a turn for the worse and the leader of the Catholic Church is now on non-invasive ventilation. The Pope has experienced a worrying health setback after suffering breathing difficulties — which has required the assistance of ventilation.
“The Holy Father this afternoon, after a morning spent alternating respiratory physiotherapy with prayer in the chapel, presented an isolated attack of bronchospasm which, however, this resulted in an episode of vomiting with inhalation and a sudden worsening of the respiratory condition,” it said in a statement.
The statement added while the pope has “remained alert and aware at all times”, the prognosis on his condition remained “guarded”.

“The Holy Father was promptly bronchoaspirated and began non-invasive mechanical ventilation, with a good response on gas exchange,” the statement continued. “The Holy Father remained alert and oriented at all times, collaborating in the therapeutic maneuvers. The prognosis therefore remains reserved.”
“He received Holy Communion this morning,” the statement concluded.
The statement is a turnaround from another good night where reports indicated the Pope’s medical situation had slightly improved. Here’s that earlier report:
Pope Francis’ 15th night at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital went peacefully and the 88-year-old pontiff is now resting, according to the Holy See Press Office’s Friday morning update, Vatican News reported.
His care at the hospital began Feb. 14 after he experienced bronchitis. He is now being treated for bilateral pneumonia. In its Rome morning updates this week, the press office has been reporting that the pontiff’s respective preceding nights have been peaceful.
On Thursday evening, according to Vatican News, the press office notified the media that Pope Francis’ clinical condition is again improving. Still, “due to the complexity of the clinical picture, further days of clinical stability are needed to clarify the prognosis,” the article said.

On Thursday, the pontiff underwent respiratory physiotherapy, rested, prayed in the chapel, received the Eucharist, and worked, according to the article.
The March 1 Jubilee Audience has been cancelled, the press office said, according to Vatican News.
Cardinal Baldassare Reina, the vicar general for the Diocese of Rome, led the rosary for the pope Thursday evening at St. Peter’s Square.
