‘Shrek 5’ teaser trailer sparks backlash over character redesigns
(KTLA) – The teaser trailer for “Shrek 5” has sparked strong reactions on social media, with many fans unhappy about the characters’ redesigns. The trailer features older versions of Shrek, Fiona, their daughter Felicia, Donkey and Pinocchio.
On X, many fans compared the old character design to the new one, saying that DreamWorks Animation, the studio behind the movie, “ruined the characters.”
Some fans are pressuring DreamWorks Animation to restore the characters to their original designs, comparing the situation to the social media backlash Paramount faced over its early "Sonic the Hedgehog" concept designs.
Still, some social media users defended the redesign, calling it "inevitable" given the original "Shrek" film's 2001 release and advancements in animation technology.
“Shrek 5” will see the return of Mike Myers as Shrek, Cameron Diaz as Fiona and Eddie Murphy as Donkey. Zendaya joins the star-studded cast as the voice of Felicia, Shrek and Fiona’s daughter.
The highly anticipated movie is set to hit theaters on Christmas 2026.
