Mother and child escape burning car at Taco Bell in SW Oklahoma City
OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — A young mom and her baby barely escaped a burning car. The chaotic ordeal unfolded Friday evening in a Taco Bell parking lot.
Maysa Webster says she had her car "Johnny Boy" for years, and just finished paying it off on Tuesday, which is why losing it in the fire hurts so much more.
However, things could have been a lot worse if she didn't act quickly.
Webster pulled into a Taco Bell parking lot near S May Avenue and I-240 in southwest Oklahoma City to grab some food for her and her son. After parking, she started to hear something weird going on with her car.
She says it started making a popping noise and smoke started coming out of her car.
That is when she knew she only had a few moments to save her son.
"I started seeing smoke that was progressively getting worse and worse," Webster said. "So, I didn't know whether to turn my car on or off. So, I kind of just got out, grabbed my son as fast as I could, because it literally started catching on fire."
Both Webster and her son were able to make it out safely, but her car is a total loss.
Fire crews eventually put out the flames, preventing the fire from spreading to Taco Bell.
Webster says it is going to be tough on her to try and find another car, but she is thankful that she and her son are okay.
