Committee formed to study using AI in Kansas legal system
TOPEKA (KSNT) - Chief Justice Marla Luckert is forming a committee that will study the use of artificial intelligence in the Kansas legal system.
On Thursday, the Kansas Supreme Court issued a press release announcing the 21-member Ad Hoc Artificial Intelligence Committee. The committee was formed via an administrative order by Luckert.
"Artificial intelligence holds great promise for helping us work more effectively within the court system, but we must make sure we use it responsibly," Luckert said.
Luckert said in the press release that AI could help courts do routine tasks faster or make services more available to those who need them.
“This committee will propose the policies and procedures that will govern how we ultimately use AI to ensure it is appropriate and beneficial," Luckert said.
The committee will be split into two subcommittees focused on internal policies and external policies. They will:
- study AI use as it relates to the judicial branch.
- recommend policies and procedures for AI use by the judicial branch, including policies for vetting AI vendors and software.
- recommend policies and procedures for AI use by attorneys, parties to court cases, and public users of judicial branch services.
- serve as the governing body to review, evaluate, and approve potential use cases related to court functions.
