Thousands soak up 'Christmas spirit' with 40th Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony at Pioneer Courthouse Square
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Thousands of people attended the 40th Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony in downtown Portland to get a bit of holiday cheer Friday night.
High school choirs, city officials and community members all gathered at Pioneer Courthouse Square to watch the tree light up in the spirit of the season.
"Trying to come down and take the grandkids out and experience the Christmas spirit," said Lucius Jackson, who waited hours in advance with his family.
Jackson said it's the first time he and his family has come down to witness the tree lighting ceremony in 15 years.
Ken Berry, with Albina Music Trust, said he thinks the ceremony represents spreading love to others.
"Right now is so important to promote peace and love and understanding — cohesiveness —and so this is what the program I think means to me," said Berry, a regular attendee of the event each year.
Portlanders gathered, faces glowing with anticipation, beneath the crisp autumn air.
Berry said it's more than a tradition but a family legacy. His granddaughter helped to close out the sing-along, just as her father did 37 years ago.
"Seeing everyone come together is such a joyful experience," Berry said.
Rebecca Leonard said the ceremony is a needed piece of respite during these times when so many people are suffering and going through struggles.
"I think we need to be together — we need to be together and help others out," Leonard said.
Pioneer Courthouse Square is hosting a variety of other festive events this holiday season, including a Portland Holiday Brew Fest, Great Figgy Pudding Caroling Competition and a Tuba Christmas Concert.
