Sports Briefs: Redwood grad Horstmeyer takes lead for San Diego
Redwood High grad Kylie Horstmeyer led San Diego with 16 points, but the Toreros lost to Nebraska-Omaha, 70-66, on Friday. Horstmeyer is averaging 13.6 points per game for San Diego (2-3).
Men’s basketball
The Washington Huskies beat Santa Clara 76-69 on Friday to improve to 6-1 ahead of their Big Ten Conference opener at UCLA on Tuesday. Branson School Jase Butler is averaging 4.2 points in 13.8 minutes per game as a freshman for the Huskies. Butler had two rebounds and an assist in 4 minutes during the Huskies’ 73-67 win against Colorado State on Thursday.
Men’s water polo
Marin Catholic grad Brendan Cassidy and No. 3 Fordham are preparing to face Long Beach State in the first round of the NCAA playoffs on Friday, Dec. 6, at Stanford. Cassidy, a junior attacker, has eight goals during the Rams’ 31-0 season heading into Friday’s playoffs against Long Beach (20-10) and freshman Jovan Mandic, a San Domenico grad.
In other matchups Friday, No. 2 USC takes on Cal Baptist. Redwood High grad Charlie Mills has 36 saves in eight games this season with the Trojans.
Redwood grad Max Matthews, a redshirt freshman, has six goals in 14 games for top-seeded UCLA, which takes on Salem (West Virginia).
