Crash with semi, multiple cars briefly shuts I-270 south down
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) -- A crash involving multiple vehicles, including a semi, briefly shut down I-270's southbound lanes through the west side of Columbus.
An Ohio Department of Transportation camera showed the semi had jackknifed into the western wall of the highway. The agency said all southbound lanes past I-70 were closed due to the crash. Multiple emergency vehicles are at the scene, and while the semi remained in place, traffic began trickling past as of 9:30 p.m.
The Franklin County Sheriff's Office told NBC4 that besides the semi, the crash involved between five and seven other cars. Ice on the bridge past I-70 on I-270 southbound caused the crashes, and resulted in two people being taken to hospitals in stable condition. The sheriff's office said multiple tow trucks had to come to the scene to help with the cars that crashed, and ODOT crews salted the bridge.
Similar crashes happened a week prior, a few miles away on the opposite side of I-270. In the northbound lanes running through Hilliard, two back-to-back crashes on Saturday resulted in the death of 36-year-old Haley Ziverts.
