Thanksgiving at St. Joseph Diner: 'Best way of showing our thanks'
LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- St. Joseph Diner serves around 700 meals daily, and Thanksgiving is no different.
Ben Broussard with Catholic Charities said volunteers plan their family Thanksgiving plans around serving at the diner.
"St. Joseph Diner is a different kind of gathering," Broussard said. "But it's one that's full of love and warmth."
Bishop Douglas Deshotel was one of the volunteers, saying Mass in the morning and then serving in the kitchen.
"Addressing the needs of the hungry and also addressing the needs of the homeless. It's our best way of showing our thanks to God," Deshotel said.
Deshotel said serving others shows those who may not have faith that God cares for them.
"We present the face of God to them," Deshotel said. "Someone thinks about them, and someone cares about them."
Volunteer shifts were full for Thanksgiving, but the diner has openings every day.
"My call to the community is to look at the warmth and love of the diner on Thanksgiving Day and find your place at St Joseph Diner on one of the 364 other days of the year," Broussard said.
